2026 Volkswagen Atlas vs. 2026 Hyundai Palisade

2026 Volkswagen Atlas vs. 2026 Hyundai Palisade

Looking for an SUV that’s designed for family life and offers a level of refinement that elevates every drive? A new 2026 Volkswagen Atlas near you may be the answer! This midsize, three-row SUV offers modern style, thoughtful amenities, and confident performance for every weekday and weekend adventure.

But how do you know if the Atlas is the right SUV for you and your family? After all, there are many other competing SUVs available, including the new 2026 Hyundai Palisade SUV. We’re here to show you how the Atlas holds its own among the competition.

While the Palisade has a lot going for it, can it measure up to the driving experience that the Volkswagen Atlas has to offer? Let’s find out in the following 2026 Volkswagen Atlas vs. 2026 Hyundai Palisade comparison!

Engine & Performance

Offered in a front-wheel-drive or an all-wheel drive version, the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine, which is matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission, boasting 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet torque. And when properly equipped, maximum Volkswagen Atlas towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.

This midsize SUV is surprisingly fuel efficient, too. Its base trim level boasts an EPA-estimated 20/27/23 MPG (city/highway/combined) with front-wheel drive and an EPA-estimated 20/26/22 MPG (city/highway/combined) with all-wheel drive.

Looking at the Palisade, we see this midsize SUV comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 287 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Its base trim level offers an EPA-estimated 19/25/21 MPG (city/highway/combined)1 with front-wheel drive and an EPA-estimated 18/24/20 MPG (city/highway/combined)1 with all-wheel drive. When properly equipped, the Palisade can tow up to 5,000 pounds as well.

The Palisade also comes in a hybrid version, which gives it an automatic advantage over the Atlas in terms of efficiency. However, while the 2026 Hyundai Palisade’s hybrid engine does offer more power and more efficiency than the Atlas’ gas engine, the Palisade’s gas engine isn’t quite as fuel efficient as the Atlas’ gas engine.

Cabin Comfort & Convenience

2026 Volkswagen Atlas interior

Comparing cargo space, the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas interior has the definite advantage here — in all rows, in fact. Behind the third row, you’ll get 20.6 cubic feet, behind the second row, you’ll get 55.5 cubic feet, and behind the first row, you’ll get 96.6 cubic feet.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Palisade interior gives you 19.1 cubic feet behind the third row, 46.3 cubic feet behind the second row, and 86.7 cubic feet behind the front seats.

The cabin of the Atlas accommodates seven passengers, while the cabin of the Palisade accommodates eight passengers in the base trim level, and seven in the rest of the trim levels, with eight as an option in two of its other trim levels.

The Volkswagen Atlas leads the way in comfort, offering standard heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces, and Climatronic® three-zone automatic climate control. Heated second-row outboard seats are offered in the top two trim levels.

While the Palisade does offer heated front seats, you won’t find them in the base trim level, and you won’t get ventilated seats or a heated steering wheel until you reach the fourth trim level in the lineup. The Palisade offers leatherette seating, but not in the base trim level, which is outfitted with cloth seating surfaces.

When it comes to three-zone automatic climate control, however, the Palisade finds equal footing with the Atlas, offering this feature in all trim levels as well. Like the Atlas, heated second-row seats come in higher trim levels, too. But unlike the Atlas, the Palisade offers the addition of ventilated second-row seats in higher trim levels.

But the Atlas isn’t done impressing us. Leather seating surfaces are offered in the top two trim levels, as well as stainless steel pedal caps and foot rest in the very top trim level. But massage front seats with four-way lumbar in the top trim level are the crowning comfort feature.

The Palisade offers leather-trimmed seats and premium Nappa leather in two of the top trim levels, but no massaging seats can be found in the lineup.

Technology & Connectivity

Both SUVs are designed with advanced technology features that bring connectivity and convenience to every drive.

The Atlas starts off strong, offering standard wireless charging, a 12-inch touchscreen, wireless App-Connect, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, and keyless access for all the doors and the liftgate.

A Harman Kardon® premium audio system with a center speaker and a subwoofer is included in the top trim level, treating you to an upgraded listening experience, while available multi-color adjustable ambient lighting allows you to personalize nighttime drives.

In the Palisade, wireless charging is included, but not in the base trim level. This SUV features a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®, and Proximity Key Entry with Push Button Start.

A Bose® premium audio system with Centerpoint and SoundTrue Enhanced Technology is found in higher trim levels, a convenient Passenger Talk in-car intercom comes standard, and ambient lighting is available.

While pricing for both SUVs is not too far off from each other, the Volkswagen Atlas SUV does offer the lower starting price point of the two lineups.

The Palisade does offer a hybrid version, but the gas-only Atlas offers better fuel economy than the gas-only Palisade. And when you consider the standard features you’ll get in the Atlas, such as heated and ventilated front seats, as well as the generous amount of cargo space the Atlas offers — more than the Palisade — you’ll be getting excellent value when you opt for the Atlas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which SUV offers the better value?

Both SUVs offer a strong assortment of features, but the Atlas gives you standard heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leatherette seating surfaces, and wireless charging right off the bat. These features are also available in the Palisade lineup, but you won’t get them in the base trim level. Plus, the Atlas offers a slightly lower starting price than the Palisade, more cargo space, and better fuel economy compared to the gas models of the Palisade lineup.

Which SUV is better for road trips and hauling gear?

Considering that the Atlas offers more cargo space than the Palisade, the Atlas is an excellent choice for road trips and hauling all kinds of gear and bulky items. In fact, the Atlas offers up to 96.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. However, the Atlas offers seating for seven, so if you need an extra seat, the Palisade comes with seating for eight in its base trim and offers available seating for eight in two of its other trim levels.

Does either SUV offer a hybrid?

The Palisade is the only SUV of the two to offer an available hybrid engine. However, the Volkswagen Atlas SUV’s turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine is more fuel efficient than the Hyundai Palisade SUV’s 3.5-liter V6 engine.

What does ownership look like long-term?

Both SUVs offer warranty coverage for peace of mind during your years of ownership.

For the Atlas, the Volkswagen Carefree Coverage package comes standard, which includes:

  • 2 years of scheduled Carefree Maintenance4
  • 3 years or 36,000 miles of 24/7 Roadside Assistance (whichever occurs first)5
  • 4 years or 50,000 miles of New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage (whichever occurs first)6

For the Palisade, warranty coverage7 includes:

  • 5 years/60,000 miles New Vehicle Limited
  • 10 years/100,000 miles Powertrain Limited
  • 7 years/unlimited miles Anti-perforation
  • 5 years/unlimited miles 24/7 Roadside Assistance

Which SUV should I choose?

That’s ultimately up to you! Consider what each SUV has to offer to see which one fits your lifestyle best. For example, if you need extra cargo space, the Atlas delivers. However, if you need extra seating, the Palisade offers seating for up to eight. If you want standard features like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leatherette seating surfaces, and wireless charging, you’ll get them in the base trim of the Atlas, but not the base trim level of the Palisade. However, if you want hybrid performance, only the Palisade lineup offers hybrid options.
