An SUV Showdown: The 2025 Volkswagen Atlas vs. the 2025 VW ID.4

July 8th, 2025 by

In the automotive industry, you not only have to face the competition from the outside but also confront it from within, and Volkswagen is a cutthroat competitor.

With a reliable and family-friendly focus, the Volkswagen lineup ensures you can find fun in every drive, including your daily commute.

So, how do you decide between two tough competitors within the same family?

The new Volkswagen Atlas and the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4 present a unique challenge as two strong competitors in the SUV market, as well as within their own family lineups.

Join us as we explore two household names in the automotive market, from performance power to interior features, and decide for yourself who comes out on top.

Is the Grass Greener on the Electric Side? Performance, Power, and MPG

One of the major differences between the Atlas and the ID.4 lies in what’s under the hood–or what isn’t.

The Volkswagen ID.4: Electric Power

Mounted in the rear of the ID.4 is the 58.0-kWh battery or, on higher trims and all-wheel drive models, the dual-motor 77.0-kWh battery. Producing 201 horsepower and 330 horsepower, respectively, the ID.4 delivers a smooth and refined ride with every mile.

And speaking of miles, the EPA range for the 2025 models is 263 miles for the 77.0-kWh battery and 291 miles for the RWD version. Compatible with both DC fast charging and at-home charging, the ID. 4 is a great starting point if you’re interested in making the switch to electric.

The Volkswagen Atlas: Gas-Powered Excellence

The gas-powered Atlas is a tried-and-true favorite in the VW lineup. Every Atlas comes equipped with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which delivers 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, giving the Atlas a little pep in its step.

The EPA estimates that the Volkswagen Atlas achieves 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, allowing you to say goodbye to frequent gas station stops.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts: The VW ID.4 vs. the Volkswagen Atlas Interior

A major point of contention when shopping for a vehicle centers on the feel and capabilities behind the wheel–literally.

Family-Friendly and Simple: The Atlas Interior

The Volkswagen Atlas for 2025 prides itself on updated features, practicality, and simplicity. Presenting itself as the perfect family-friendly ride, the Atlas’ cabin features a number of storage nooks and crannies to stash small items, as well as a generous number of cupholders necessary for the life of a suburban family.

The Atlas can seat up to seven passengers comfortably, thanks to its three rows of seating, Climatronic three-zone automatic climate control, and heated and ventilated front seats. Enjoy the open sky with the panoramic sunroof, or stay connected with your technology using wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi Hotspot.

High-Tech and High-Quality: The Volkswagen ID.4 Interior

The VW ID.4 is geared towards those who appreciate design details and elements that add an extra ounce of style to their daily drive. The contemporary design is both practical and playful, offering standard cloth seats with heat. At the same time, higher trims provide the option for a more distinguished faux-leather upholstery and 12-way power-adjustable front seats.

Stay connected with the 12.9-inch touchscreen display and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, and cruise along to your favorite playlist with the Harman Kardon premium sound system.

It All Comes Down to Money and Trim Levels

We hate to say that money matters when deciding between your dream ride, but unfortunately, it is a hefty factor to consider.

Both the Atlas and the ID.4 have five trim levels to choose from, offering varying degrees of standard features and price points.
