Brake care for your Volkswagen extends beyond the basics of brake pad replacement and includes the care of the entire braking system. From caliper care to brake fluid checks to Volkswagen brake rotor resurfacing. At Carolina Volkswagen in Charlotte, North Carolina, we are dedicated to helping you maximize your use of your Volkswagen and its features. By ensuring your brakes remain in exceptional working order, you are able to benefit from the latest braking advancements and keep you and your passengers safe no matter what the road presents.
Brake rotors exist as the “last” point of contact in your braking system. When you press the brake pedal, your brake fluid snaps into action, the caliper kicks in and it presses the brake pad. The pad then contacts the rotor surface and provides your stopping power. Over time, tiny imperfections can build up on the rotor surface or cause pits, limiting your braking ability. In many instances, the rotor can be resurfaced to provide a new, smooth surface for the brake pad to contact.
Because the brake pad presses into the rotor to stop your vehicle, it is important to have as much surface area as possible for the pad to contact. When pits or rust spots develop on the brake rotor surface, the contact area is limited, and your braking power can be less than ideal. Conversely, a rotor able to fully hug the brake pad surface maximizes your stopping. The clean surface of a level rotor also increases the life of your brake pads by making wear more uniform. In a resurfacing job, a special lathe is used to shave a surface layer off of the rotor to make it as smooth as new again.
A full brake rotor replacement is typically only necessary when resurfacing is no longer possible. Some newer brake rotors are manufactured without any extra surface area available for shaving. The rotor needs to be a set minimum thickness in order to function properly. If there is extra material, the rotor can be resurfaced.
Volkswagen manufacturer recommendations feature the best suggestions for the care of Volkswagen brake rotors and maintenance, and any brake rotor replacements accomplished at our dealership will feature original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, parts to ensure they last as long as your original. If your rotors were ever replaced with an aftermarket part, the mileage may vary. Your rotors are checked at a brake inspection, so always keep this twice-annual appointment to ensure you are driving with the best brakes possible.
The certified technicians at Carolina Volkswagen are committed to the care of your vehicle. We rely on original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, parts to restore your car to peak efficiency.
