Stuck Between a Used VW and a Certified Pre-Owned Volkswagen? Here’s How to Choose the Right Ride for Your Lifestyle

September 8th, 2025 by

Buying a new car off the showroom lot often comes down to your budget and which ride makes the most sense for you financially.

More often than not, our budgets force us to refocus from the brand-new 2025 sedans to the used VW for sale or the certified pre-owned Volkswagen SUV that has been around for a few years.

But wait…what’s the difference between a used and certified pre-owned vehicle?

Follow along as we guide you through the difference between these two budget-friendly options and how to choose the right ride for your lifestyle at your next visit to our Volkswagen dealership.

What’s the Difference Between a Used and Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle?

Whether you’re just starting your car-buying journey or are looking to make a change to your daily driver, you’ve likely become familiar with both new and used vehicles. However, not everyone is familiar with certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles, often using the term interchangeably with “used”.

While every CPO vehicle is a used car, it’s critical to your car-buying journey to note that not every used car is–or can be–a CPO.

What is a Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle?

A CPO vehicle refers to a manufacturer-backed car that has been previously owned but has undergone a rigorous inspection process. Within the realm of used vehicles, those with a CPO designation are considered the best of the best.

It’s important to note that true factory CPO cars are only available at dealerships of the same brand. For example, a VW that’s certified pre-owned can only be found at a Volkswagen dealership. If you see a VW Atlas marked “certified” on the lot of a Toyota dealership, it isn’t a factory-backed CPO vehicle.

How Does a Vehicle Become Certified?

Every dealership has a different process and set of requirements for a vehicle to become certified pre-owned.

In general, most vehicles typically have to meet these general prerequisites before undergoing the CPO inspection process:

  • Relatively recent model year: Models past a particular year will not be eligible for the CPO program. While the year itself varies between dealerships, vehicles will typically be no older than 8 or 9 years.
  • Low mileage: Have a used vehicle over 100,000 miles? You won’t find them in the CPO program. Low mileage is a key requirement for cars entering the CPO program, but a specific number will vary between dealerships.
  • Proper maintenance: Keeping your used VW well-maintained is essential for the CPO program, ensuring that recommended services are received from day one.
  • Collision-free history: Vehicles entering the CPO program are often gently used, with a clean vehicle history report. That’s right–you won’t find vehicles with an accident history in our CPO lineup.

Once a used vehicle meets these requirements, it must undergo and pass a comprehensive inspection. This varies from dealership to dealership, but most will have to pass a 150-point inspection or more to make it into our VW certified pre-owned inventory.

CPO vs. Used: Deciding Which Option is Best For You

As with any choice, there will always be perks and drawbacks on the way to a final decision. While there are many similarities between used and CPO vehicles, it’s important to understand the advantages when choosing which ride is best for you.

Advantages of Choosing a Used Volkswagen for Sale

One of the main advantages of opting for a used Volkswagen over a CPO is the cost. A used car often costs significantly less than a CPO model, and finding a used Volkswagen near you often leads to a variety of models at varying price points.

However, while price is not necessarily a concern, reliability is. Before purchasing a used model, you must first determine if it is in good condition, or you put yourself at risk of spending money on a possible lemon.

Advantages of Buying a Certified Used Volkswagen

CPO vehicles often provide many of the perks we love about buying a brand-new car at a fraction of the price. In addition to cost, CPO models also provide some additional benefits to the daily driver:

  • Offer current-generation models
  • Low-risk purchase thanks to the inspection process
  • Sometimes it will come with buyback protection or swap-out alternatives
  • Offers roadside assistance
  • Extends the original factory warranty
  • Can include basic Volkswagen service maintenance
  • Special certified Volkswagen pre-owned financing
